Choosing the Right Real Estate Brokerage

Choosing the right real estate brokerage is a big decision and can play a vital role in your success as an agent. While you technically work for yourself as a real estate agent, you must be working on behalf of a broker and finding the right one will allow you to explore your real estate career with confidence.

In most markets, there are many brokerages to choose from and you should carefully examine the differences between each. We’ve outlined some important factors you’ll want to consider during this process.

First Impressions

What is your initial impression of the brokerage? Are they well branded? Do they have a professional and resourceful looking website? Their image will be a direct reflection of you and you’ll want to take pride in associating yourself with their brand.

Is the staff friendly? Is their office clean and comfortable, and in a convenient location? Remember that you’ll be bringing clients in to this space and you want to feel assured that they will have a positive experience.

Training and Support

A brokerage committed to the success of their agents will offer the training and support needed to give them a competitive advantage. As an agent, you’ll need to fulfill continuing education requirements and some brokerages will offer these courses on-site and free of charge. You’ll also want to ask about what they offer in terms of technology training, marketing tools and support staff.

For many agents, this is going to be the most important aspect to consider when selecting a brokerage. Find out what their key principles are and how specifically they put them into action. Talk to some of their current agents to get their perspective. Ultimately, if you don’t feel you connect with the brokerage’s core philosophy, it’s likely that you’ll lack confidence in their ability to help you succeed.

Commission and Fees

There are a wide variety of commission structures, tiers and fee arrangements that vary from company to company. Get a clear understanding of what you’ll be expected to pay in terms of commission and transaction fees. It’s also important to learn about any additional costs such as franchise fees, agent fees, desk fees, advertising costs and copy fees to name a few.

Take your time in making your selection. Determine the qualities and benefits that are most important to you and keep a list of pros and cons for each brokerage you’re considering. This may help in deciding which will be the best fit to help you reach your goals as a real estate agent. Don’t be afraid to interview a broker more than once if you feel you need to!
